Advanced Live Electronic Performance
What this program covers
Live music production requires combining technical proficiency with creative adaptability. This program walks through the essential components — hardware integration, signal routing, performance preparation, and troubleshooting under pressure. Whether you're preparing for live gigs or streaming performances, the curriculum addresses both the fundamentals and the edge cases that separate functional setups from reliable ones.
We focus on real scenarios: venue acoustics, equipment failures, time constraints, and working with musicians who have varying levels of technical understanding. Each module builds on the previous one, moving from controlled studio settings to unpredictable live environments.
Program structure and stages
Course outline
- Weeks 1-3: Improvisation techniques within structured electronic arrangements
- Weeks 4-5: Creative effect processing and audio manipulation as performance tools
- Weeks 6-7: Loop-based composition and extending sections musically
- Weeks 8-10: Hardware synthesizer and drum machine integration
- Weeks 11-12: Modular synthesis basics for live performance context
- Weeks 13-15: Developing three complete performance sets with peer feedback
- Week 16: Live showcase with recording and professional critique
Includes guest sessions with active performers sharing their specific approaches and setups.
You already know how to keep a set running without technical disasters. This program is about making your live performances genuinely interesting instead of just playing back pre-arranged tracks.
We focus on improvisation within electronic frameworks, creative effect chains, and integrating modular or hardware synthesizers into your laptop-based setup.
Performance approaches that keep audiences engaged
Dmytro Kulbaba walks you through building flexible arrangements where you can respond to the room, extend sections naturally, and create variation without losing structure. You will learn to use clip launching strategically, work with loops in ways that sound musical rather than repetitive, and transition between sections smoothly.
The curriculum includes extensive work with audio effects as performance instruments. We cover creative uses of delay, reverb, distortion, and modulation that go beyond standard mixing applications.
Integrating hardware without complicating your workflow
Four sessions focus specifically on adding synthesizers, drum machines, or modular gear to your live rig. You will learn practical sync methods, when to use external gear versus plugins, and how to keep your setup portable.
Guest sessions with performers from Kyiv electronic music community provide real examples of different performance philosophies and technical approaches.
You will develop three distinct live sets during the program, each exploring different improvisational techniques and equipment configurations.

How sessions are structured
Group sessions
Weekly group sessions follow a consistent format: technical demonstration, hands-on practice with provided equipment, group troubleshooting exercises, and peer feedback. Each session addresses one specific production challenge — from routing multi-track stems to managing latency in hybrid setups. Participants work through the same problem simultaneously, then compare approaches. Sessions last 90 minutes and accommodate up to 8 participants per cohort.
Individual sessions
Private sessions are tailored to your specific equipment, workflow, and goals. Whether you're preparing for a particular venue, troubleshooting a recurring issue, or optimizing your personal setup, these one-on-one sessions address what group formats can't. Sessions are scheduled flexibly, last 60 minutes, and include post-session notes with recommendations and resources specific to your situation.
Practice assignments
Between sessions, you'll complete focused exercises designed to build muscle memory and confidence. These aren't theoretical tasks — they're simulations of real production scenarios with time constraints and intentional complications. You'll record your process, note what went wrong, and bring questions to the next session. Most assignments take 2-3 hours and require access to a basic audio interface and DAW.
